Adrian Utley's Guitar Orchestra feat. Album 2013 1 Song. In C. Adrian Utleys Guitar Orchestra. Electronic , 2013. A sequence of 53 variably repeated fragments of music, Terry Riley's minimalist milestone In C is most often performed by ensembles of keyboards and winds, but Portishead guitarist Adrian Utley has here organised a version dominated by guitars. They are used to expose the intricate interplay of lines, and the way that the piece appears to speed up and slow down as the sequence. On back cover: Adrian Utley's Guitar orchestra presents Terry Riley's 'In C' featuring 18 guitars, 4 organs, bass clarinet and percussion. Recorded live at St Geroge's hall, Bristol, February 6th 2013. Hear Portishead axeman Adrian Utleys extensive reinterpretation of Terry Rileys minimalist touchstone In C. Rileys oft-recorded 1964 work remains one of if not the most iconic pieces in 20th century minimalism. Utleys version features assistance from his specially assembled Guitar Orchestra, featuring 24 Bristol-based musicians, John Parrish and Jim Barr among them. The recording, made earlier this year at Bristols St. Georges Hall, will be made available to buy through Invada later this month. Making use of 19 guitars, four organs and a bass clarinet, Utleys version makes for stunning listening a gorgeous, thickly woven tapestry of massed electric guitar. Adrian Utley reimagines Terry Riley's seminal piece 'In C' for electric guitars. The original piece composed in 1964 comprises 53 phrases to be played by musicians at any speed, any octave and with any instruments. Now Portishead's Ardian Utley has recorded a version of the piece with a nineteen strong orchestra of electric guitars and backed up by organ. It's an invigorating performance that adds yet another dimension to a piece that has been reinterpreted and presented many times in the last half a century. Read More.
