Album

Jean Sibelius. Thomas Beecham. The Tempest Stormen, Op. 109, is incidental music to Shakespeare's The Tempest, by Jean Sibelius. He composed it in 192526, at about the same time as he wrote his tone poem Tapiola. Sibelius derived two suites from the score. The music is said to display an astounding richness of imagination and inventive capacity, and is considered by some as one of Sibelius's greatest achievements. He represented individual characters through instrumentation choices: particularly admired was his use of harps and. The TEMPEST Incidental Music, as Op. 109 contemporaneous with TAPIOLA, was one of Sibelius' last significant musical utterances, with wonderful harp filigrees evoking Caliban and a TAPIOLA-like storm Beecham builds to terrifying proportions. The SCÈNES HISTORIQUES were immediately released filler for Isaac Stern's performance of the fiddle concerto, and they have evocative inscriptions and feature castanet obbligato in a burst of real Baltic authenticity. They're more than filler with their unique patina of Beecham panache. The KARELIA excerpts are exuberantly brisk, pasted together from 1946 EMI and 1954 CBS originals.
