Album

Stones in the Road is the fifth album by Mary Chapin Carpenter, and her first and only 1 Country Album on the Billboard charts. The album also contains her first and only 1 Hot Country Singles hit, Shut Up and Kiss Me. Other charting singles were Tender When I Want to Be at 6, House of Cards at 21, and Why Walk When You Can Fly at 45. The nostalgically themed title track was first recorded by folk singer Joan Baez for her 1992 studio album Play Me Backwards, to whom Carpenter first. For this offering, she tipped her sound down to its basics and returned to the core of her music - namely, her folkier singersongwriter roots. Although the lyrics are among her best and the songs thoroughly memorable and beautifully literate, Carpenter cut back on the number of hooks in her melodies, creating a palette that required closer listening to appreciate. The 1994 sequel to her mainstream country breakthrough on Come on Come On further underscores Mary Chapin Carpenter's true identity, more Ivy League folk rocker than new country cowgirl. Not so with Stones in the Road. As another couple reviewers have stated, it is that rarest of things, the perfect album. I think the fact that three of Mary Chapin Carpenter's albums that I own out of 5 currently fall into the love the entire album category speaks very much to MCC's talent as a singer and songwriter. There are only a very few other artists in my collection I can say that about for multiple albums
