A timeless masterpiece that provokes the popular question - who's listening to it in the year 20--? I know I do.
Just added this version as it has been discussed on these comments recently . https://www.discogs.com/The-Stone-Roses-The-Stone-Roses/release/12143482
The version sitting in front of me should be this first (embossed) edition. The Matrix/Runout is as follows; Side A : (etched) EX ORE LP 502 A2 (stamped) SNA Logo (etched) DF1 [-situated below ORE-]Side B: (etched) ORE LP 502. B2 (stamped) SNA Logo (etched) EXCan anyone else confirm their matrix numbers with reference to text/logos other than the etched ORE LP 502.
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses your matrix version is now added along with (I think) and earlier version.
Just taken delivery on another non-embossed sleeve with the same matrix, except the "DFI" is missing. I will try and add these 2-new editions later this week.
I have the same matrix but with an non-embossed sleeve. I believe this is a 5th or 6th UK pressing.
I've been given this information by an Ebay seller called Rod who's knows his stuff. Hope it helps:The A2/B2 means first pressing from 1989 with black and red labels, but 4 versions were made. All these versions were pressed in 1989:1. The 1st press is Embossed Shiny Gold Lettering, A2/B2, Black Red Labels2. Flat Gold Lettering, A2/B2, Black Red Labels3. Embossed Gold Lettering, A2 88-8 B2 88-9, white Silvertone Labels4. Then there is another one that has the A2/B2 matrix , but has Matt Brown (not Gold), Black Red Label, some sites say this was released in 1990, where the matrix of A2/B2 means 1989. This one has a Brits Award sticker for 2/1990 as the band were up for best newcomer. After that there were no further UK issues until 1991 with the 2 x 12" Remaster.
I've also recently found 2 other version which pre-date 1991 double 45rpm pressing.5th pressing?Matrix - EX ORE LP 502 A26th pressing?Matrix - EX ORE LP 502 A2 (with "DFI" below "ORE")
What about the A2 88-8 B2 88-9 pressing that has the tiny double "^" chevrons marks?
I purchased this record the day it was release. It is as described here but without the embossed front sleeve. There had to be none embossed copies sold at first release time as I have one. I am having to sell it as a 1990 re-issue which is incorrect.
If you’ve got it with the black and red labels and it has A2 and B2 run outs, then you’ve got the first pressing... roughly half had embossed and half didn’t for the first pressing... Embossed does fetch a higher price, but it’s no rarer or older than the non embossed first pressing.
I have one the same i also purchased in 89, very frustrating!
My version is like this, with all the labels and everything, but the name on the cover isn't embossed. Is mine a version not here yet?
It came out with embossed and non embossed covers when it was first released... If you have a copy with black and red labels with A2 and B2 run outs, that’ll tell you it’s a first pressing... They printed roughly the same amount of covers with and without the embossed gold lettering for the first pressing, the embossed does tend to go for more, but it’s actually no rarer or older than the non embossed first pressing.
I have a mint copy of the non-embossed version. Cream labels with one of the labels completely blank bar the 'Silvertone Records' logo. Not sure what was going on there but I think its either a later 1989 or early 1990 re-press.
I have one that has all the same barcode and matrix numbers, but also not embossed. As well as this, there is just a plain inner sleeve and the label is white. I'm wondering if it's a bootleg
I think yours is a 2nd repress. As far as I can see the repressed in same year with red and cream labels and a year or so later did another pressing but reverted back to original labels but without the embossing
Hi, mine is the same, artwork on one side of the lp, but no embossed lettering on the cover, very odd! Seems we may have a different one altogether!
This is another album I heard through my older sister first, not long after it was first released. My first impression was that it sounded so catchy, but atmospheric at the same time, like just impressions of pop songs. I was also naive enough to think that 'Elizabeth My Dear' was written about an ex-girlfriend.John Squire, no matter how lauded over the years, has never been given the rating he deserves. His work on this album is Jimmy Page quality in it's layering his song composition. Reni and Mani are a perfect duo as rhythm section, and even though he sounds off key at times Ian Brown's delivery and swagger make him one of the best front men of all time. This is of finest debut albums of it's era. It's important that to have it your collection, it should be a vinyl copy, not another format. Much like Dark Side of the Moon and many albums released a decade or so before, the whole record works as a composition of it's own. Listening to side A & side B in sequence is part of how the songs work together and play off one another.Listen to the whole thing at once. You'll want to start a band and throw paint on everything you own.JBW
Yellow, 180gram, double vinyl remastered reissue coming in July 2015 from Light In The Attic records. REJOICE.
How come no other website in the world is reporting this release? It can't be sanctioned by the band! It's claiming to be a remastered vinyl release and surely a random record company cannot do this?
thanks guys, i never herd this musiccool
what the what ? this was not released in '88 was it ?? The current NME has it down as the 1st of May, 1989 (25 years ago to the day today). other people have said March or April of '89. how come there are such conflicting dates kicking about ?!
But the promo cassette is dated 1988 with different mixes.
Correct on the date...wrong on the review. NME only gave 6/10...then spent 2 decades back tracking on said review!I saw them live 1 week later at Preston Guildhall foyer...amazing!
I remember reading the review in the NME dated 29 April 1989. They gave it 7/10. The album was released two days later on 1 May. In Ireland the album arrived in my local record shop on Friday 5 May - bought it the following day.
If you're about to get this album, try to get a hold of a newer release that includes "Elephant Stone" as well as "Fools Gold"!

https://www.discogs.com/Stone-Roses-The-Stone-Roses/release/6371866is it this the one you are talking about? sounds like your description.
I also have this cd. the pressing of the cd is the same as the original 1989 cd aka black cover. the white cover was original cd release for UK & Europe. i have no idea of its value but i own 5 other copies of the self titled debut on cd and this was the hardest find in good condition. let us know if you a find value.
Utterly fantastic debut and one of the best albums of all time (and I still think that's an understatement!). Anytime I get a chance to introduce this LP to a new friend, my anticipation grows to enormous heights because I get to listen to it again, and each time I hear it, I feel as if I'm experiencing it for the first time as well. I think it's impossible not to get lost in this recording and it's world of sound and wonder. This is truly a timeless sonic document of MAMMOTH proportions. The Stone Roses are eternal...
Not getting technical as the review before, this album was THE album of `89. It was so well put together both musically and technically it was untrue. The Roses were at the right place at the right time, changing their style from short haired black leathered clad rock stars (Sally Cinnomen) to suit the mood of the times, long haired care free mates in a band. It payed off and their debut album got recognition as an all time great. This is an album that you dont skip a track, just put it in, press play and enjoy.
Can't believe no-one has reviewed this album, which for me is the defining record of my youth. The Stone Roses were one of many bands coming from the mighty Manchester following on from the likes of The Smiths, New Order (geographically not sonically) who paved the way for the Oasis etc. Anyway, this album is a near perfect example of the late 80's / early 90's explosion of youth club culture where an indie record could be played next to a dance record and next to a rap record. All the songs are pure emotional bliss and even the shortest (Elizabeth My Dear) taking a riff from Simon & Garfunkel is miles better than the palest of imitators from the time. The lyrics of each song match perfectly the accompanying artwork from John Squire, the tight drumming from Reni and slightly funk-driven basslines from Mani were always super tight with Squire's lead guitar and Ian Brown's understated delivery - truly an album of it's time and still one of my favourites today. If you like indie, dance or just generally good music you should have a copy of this LP or CD No wonder St Etienne declared on the run-out groove to Kiss & Make Up that: "John Squire You Are My Guitar Hero"
