Album

Hard Promises is the fourth studio album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released on May 5, 1981 on Backstreet Records. Its original working title was Benmont's Revenge, referring to the band's keyboard player, Benmont Tench. The album features guest vocals from Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac on the duet Insider. The Heartbreakers also recorded the hit Stop Draggin' My Heart Around for Nicks' album Bella Donna around the time Hard Promises was recorded. The Number One song in the country that week was Rod Stewart's Tonight's the Night Gonna Be Alright, directly followed by Disco Duck by radio DJ Rick Dees. The pressure was truly on when Tom Petty began recording Hard Promises in 1980. His previous disc, Damn the Torpedoes, made him a rock superstar, but now he had to craft a follow-up. He wisely didn't mess with a winning formula, re-teaming with producer Jimmy Iovine and cutting songs that sounded like they came straight from the Torpedoes sessions. For Petty, keeping aware meant digging deeper for Hard Promises ' songs - striking closer to the heart of who he was as a songwriter while exploring a wider sonic and thematic palette. With our public image, I've always felt and it's our fault in a way I've always felt that we looked a little dumber than we are, to the public, he explained. Still, as fast as Petty and the Heartbreakers found an audience with their first few records, they just as quickly learned enough about the record business to know it could all turn around in an instant.
